What is an SEO Silo?

An SEO silo is just a way to organize the different pieces of content on your website into separate sections or topics. It's kind of like having different rooms in a house for different purposes.

For example, let's say you have a website about gardening. An SEO silo would mean putting all your articles, guides, and other content about "flowers" into one section while keeping content about "vegetables" in another section, and so on.

Within each of these topic silos, you link all of the relevant pages together. But you don't link between the different sections or silos – the flower pages only link to other flower pages, not the vegetable pages.

Why Use an SEO Silo?

There are a few good reasons to use this silo approach:

It's easier for visitors. When your website is neatly organized into topics, it's much simpler for people to find what they're looking for. They don't get confused by unrelated content.

It helps with SEO. Search engines like Google also prefer this tidy, logical structure. It shows them that your content is focused on specific topics, which can improve your rankings.

It builds authority. By linking related content together in each silo, you're telling search engines that these pages are all equally important and relevant to that topic.

How to Create an SEO Silo

Here are the basic steps to set up SEO silos on your site:

  • Make a list of topics. Decide on 4-8 main topics that cover what your site is about.

  • Create topic hubs. Make a main homepage for each core topic that outlines what it covers.

  • Sort your content. Go through all your existing posts, guides, etc. and assign each one to a relevant topic silo.

  • Add internal links. On each page, link to other related pages within the same silo using clear text links.

  • Keep it up-to-date. As you add new content, follow the silo structure and guidelines.
