What is Hilltop?
The Hilltop Algorithm by Google was developed to improve the way Google identifies and ranks the most authoritative and relevant web pages for a given search query.
It was developed by Krishna Bharat and George A. Mihăilă before they were hired by Google.
The Hilltop Algorithm primarily works by identifying "expert" pages, which are high-quality pages that link to many related pages.
It then evaluates the "authority" of a page based on how many expert pages link to it. It is designed to provide users with results from webpages that are not only relevant to their search terms but also recognized as authoritative on the topic by other expert sources in the field.
It's important to note that while the Hilltop Algorithm has influenced Google's search algorithms, Google's actual algorithms are more complex, incorporating numerous other factors in ranking search results.
