What Is Hilltop?
The Hilltop Algorithm is a search ranking algorithm created by Krishna Bharat and George Mihăilă before Google hired both of them. It was a way adopted by Google in 2003 to find the most authoritative websites in search results on a given search query. It worked by:
Identifying "expert" websites that linked to lots of sites in one particular niche
Finding out what sites those expert sites are linked to
Showing sites that got links from lots of expert sites higher in search results
So it used links from sites that were seen as "experts" or "authoritative" to figure out which other sites were also authoritative and useful on a particular topic. This helped Google rank the most credible and recommended sites at the top of search results.
