What Is the Penguin Algorithm?

The Penguin Algorithm is the codename of an algorithmic update introduced in 2012 aimed at lowering the rankings of websites that violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines. These sites use spammy techniques for link-building to gain good rankings.

The techniques used for link-building are named link schemes and they include:

• Engaging in buying or selling of links with the aim of passing PageRank

• Engaging in frequent exchange of links in return for links

• Using the programs that automatically generate links

• Engaging in artificially creating low-quality spammy backlinks
